Dr. Michael Cover, Veterinarian

Dr. Michael Cover developed his passion for caring about animals early in life while growing up on his family ranch, as a fifth generation Sandhills rancher. This truly unique lifestyle taught him about hard work and responsibility at an early age. Ranch life provided Dr. Cover the opportunity to learn how to ride horses, work cattle, rope sick animals if needed, fix fence, and put up hay in the summertime. Dr. Cover loves to hunt and fish. Growing up in western Nebraska offered the perfect environment to learn about wildlife conservation and the intrinsic value wildlife offers landowners and Nebraska as a whole.

Dr. Cover received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wyoming in Laramie, a Master of Science degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, a Graduate Certificate in the Master's Program in Public Health with an emphasis in zoonotic diseases, and his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Kansas State University. His main interests in small animal medicine focus on preventive medicine, orthopedic and soft tissue surgery, and nutrition for companion animals.

Dr. Cover is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Nebraska Veterinary Medical Association. Mike's entire focus is his family. He enjoys spending time with his wife Joni and his two boys, Jacob and Caleb, and their black lab, Abby. When Mike and Joni first moved to Lincoln, Mike chose to be a stay-at-home father for his two young children. Mike worked part time at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and then as a Mentor in the Highly Gifted Program in Lincoln Public Schools teaching math and science. Teaching gifted children was incredible, but he knew eventually he wanted to return to school and become a veterinarian. He had worked as a Veterinary Assistant prior to veterinary school.

Dr. Cover's passion for wildlife and animals has led him to serve as a Nebraska Game and Parks Firearm and Hunter Education Instructor since 2004, a lifetime member and local committee member with the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, and a volunteer coach in the Lincoln Midget Football Program and YMCA Youth Sports Program.
